Costa Rica means “rich coast”, and if there’s one thing the coast of this beautiful country is rich in, it’s surfing. Located in Central America, Costa Rica has coastlines on both the Pacific and the Caribbean.
The tricky thing about surfing is choosing not only the right place, but also the right time for the sport. Each place has its own surfing seasons, and knowing them well can help you decide when to go.

Surfing in Costa Rica
With a rainforest climate and beautiful beaches, Costa Rica has warm water and incredible waves all year round, which is why it has become such a popular surfing destination.
If you’re going to Costa Rica to surf, you should know that there are four different regions among which the surf spots are divided. Each region has its own surf spots and its own attractions.
The four regions for surfing in Costa Rica
The north of Costa Rica
The northern region of Costa Rica is often known as the Guanacaste coast. There are many great surf spots here and, if you’re lucky, they shouldn’t be too crowded.
The best spots are Playa Naranjo, known as Witch’s Rock, and Ollie’s Point, where you’ll find a world-class break that stretches for around 300 metres. There are plenty of other beaches and surf spots too, with lively and colourful towns along the way to keep you entertained.
The centre of Costa Rica
Central Costa Rica has some incredible surf spots, the most popular and best known being Boca Barranca. The mouth of this river is amazing for surfers, as it can break an insane length greater than eight football pitches. Other popular spots in the central region are Playa Hermosa and PLaya Esterillos. But the most common surf spot is Jaco, which also has the busiest surf town.
The south of Costa Rica
The southern region of Costa Rica is often known for having some of the best surf spots in the whole country. The waves are long, giving you the chance to enjoy some magical rides. The only problem is that this region doesn’t always offer optimal weather, as it tends to be quite rainy, and it’s also a very wild and rural part of Costa Rica. If you’re going surfing in this area, we recommend you do some research beforehand, as it’s not as accessible to tourists, and it’s not as easy to get around the region.
Costa Rica Caribbean
Costa Rica has two sides of coastline, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, and the Caribbean to the east. When you surf on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, you’ll find fewer breaks, and you’ll quickly notice that the surf isn’t as consistent.
There is always a risk of encountering fins in this region, however, if you take all the necessary precautions and manage to find the right time to surf in optimal conditions, this region can be extremely fun to surf and is popular with the surfing community.
Surfing seasons in Costa Rica
Although every place has its surfing seasons, with the best and worst times to surf, Costa Rica is lucky enough to be able to say that surfing is possible all year round. In fact, Costa Rica enjoys warm, pleasant weather, warm water and incredible waves all year round, whatever the season! So, as a general rule, you should be good at surfing no matter when you’re in the country.
However, you need to take the seasons into account. In particular, Costa Rica has two different surfing seasons:
The wet season (rainy season)
Also known as the rainy season, it runs from May to mid-November. This is the period when it rains the most in Costa Rica, which means there’s less chance of surfing (although there are still plenty of perfect days for surfing during this season). If you want to make the most of surfing during the rainy season, you should go to the northern region, as this is where it rains the least and the weather stays dry. The southern region, on the other hand, will be the rainiest and most irregular in terms of surfing days.
! It’s worth noting, however, that fewer people go to Costa Rica at this time of year, so you’ll be able to stumble across empty spots and enjoy perfect waves without too many people around you!
The dry season
The dry season takes place between mid-November and May, and is generally the best season for surfing as the weather will be the most consistent throughout the country, whatever the region.
You also need to know when to surf in the Pacific part of Costa Rica and when to choose the Caribbean part. The truth is that, whatever the season, the Pacific side is much more consistent and overall better for surfing, whereas the Caribbean tends to be more erratic. However, between October and April, storms start to form on the Caribbean side, and the sea comes alive with extraordinary waves.
For the rest, the water remains at the same temperature of around 80 degrees Fahrenheit all year round, so as we said, surfing is good whatever the date in Costa Rica!
