The Canary archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean is a top destination for surfing enthusiasts. Each of the main islands has something unique to offer in terms of surfing conditions, culture and scenery. I’ll try to summarise the surfing characteristics of each island and how they might suit a mainly beginner clientele. As your best seller is Corralejo, which is on Fuerteventura, I’ll try to compare the other options with this spot.

Contenus de la page

  • Fuerteventura
  • Tenerife
  • Gran Canaria
  • Lanzarote
  • La Gomera and La Palma
  • El Hierro
  • Conclusion

Fuerteventura

  • Main Features: Fuerteventura is often referred to as the ‘Hawaii of Europe’. It is known for its white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters.
  • Star spot: Corralejo is ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers with generally moderate waves.

Tenerife

  • Main Features: Tenerife offers a wide variety of surf conditions, and is a very touristy island with lots of amenities and activities to do out of the water.
  • Spot for beginners: Playa de las Américas offers gentler waves, ideal for beginners.

Gran Canaria

  • Main characteristics: More urbanised than Fuerteventura but with a variety of surf spots.
  • Spot for beginners: Las Canteras in Las Palmas is protected by a reef, offering calmer conditions for beginners.

Lanzarote

  • Main Features: Known as the “Hawaii of the first world”, Lanzarote offers more powerful waves and is better suited to experienced surfers.
  • Spot for beginners: Famara is often recommended for beginners due to its gentler waves and surf school.

La Gomera and La Palma

  • Main Features: Less crowded and more difficult to access, these islands are best suited to more adventurous surfers.
  • Spots: Not ideal for beginners.

El Hierro

  • Main Features: Very uncrowded and best suited to experienced surfers.
  • Spots: Not recommended for beginners.

Conclusion

If Corralejo in Fuerteventura is our best seller, it’s because the island offers a good balance between ideal surfing conditions for beginners and those on the edge. For beginners, Tenerife and Gran Canaria may also be good options to consider because of their tourist infrastructure and suitable surf spots.
